Information
This aircraft was constructed by Pennsylvania based Vertol Aircraft Corporation back in 1958 and was delivered to New York Airways the same year. The helicopter was used for passenger transports in the city for nearly four years before it was traded in for the new twin-turbine engined Boeing-Vertol 107-11.
Two Vertol 44s were transferred to the Swedish Air Force to fill the need for rescue helicopters due to the delay in the delivery of the Air Force’s 10 ordered Vertol 107s. The two provisional helicopters entered service in 1962.
This aircraft was given the military registration 01472 (callsign 472) and served with the Air Force Rescue Service at F2 Hägernäs in Stockholm. It was later transferred to the F8 Barkaby base in the same city.
As the first Vertol 107s were starting to arrive the Air Force soon decided to retire its two HKP 1s. The helicopters were transferred to the Navy in 1964, where they were chopped up and used for spares when rebuilding two newly imported Vertol 44Bs (
01010 and
01011).
