Heavy antenna replaced in Uppsala

By Wictor Pantzar on Aug 29, 2015
The 4-tonne antenna on top of the 225-meter radio/television mast in Uppsala, Sweden, had served the region for about 30 years. It was now time to replace the 4-tonne antenna with a more modern one in order to ensure future transmissions.

The Norwegian company Airlift was called to the scene in order to do the high-precision job. The company has the most powerful sling-load helicopter in Scandinavia – an AS 332 C Super Puma (LN-OBX) with a capacity of 4000 kg. The helicopter arrived in Uppsala on 27 August 2015, did the job on 28 August, and left shortly thereafter.

The last time Teracom brought in a heavy lifter for a job like this they hired a Kamov Ka-32 from Switzerland in order to exchange the antenna in Västerås back in 2010.

Airlift’s Super Puma is a unique resource in Scandinavia. It is frequently hired for special missions throughout large parts of northern Europe. Some of its specialities include heavy loads, sling-load operations in congested areas and hoist operations.
