Final report from Hughes 269 accident near Kinna

Jun 02, 2015
The Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens Haverikommission, SHK) has published its final report following an accident that occurred at Ă–resten Airfield, near Kinna, on 23 February 2015.

The aircraft, a private Hughes 269A with the American registration N90584, was engaged in a local private proficiency training at the airfield. The pilot, who was the only occupant, was practicing snow manoeuvres when he lost visual references due to white out. The helicopter was in the process of landing from a hover when it struck the ground with the aft part of the skids, and the tail rotor impacted the ground. The pilot, who was the sole occupant onboard, was unhurt.

The Swedish Accident Investigation Board says that the accident was caused by the fact that the risks associated with hovering over snowy ground had not been considered sufficiently. The board concludes that the pilot lacked experience in flying in such conditions, which contributed to the accident. No safety recommendations have been issued by SHK.
